How Accurate Are Fitness Trackers?

The accuracy of a fitness tracker depends on the measurement, the device, the person, and the situation. “Accurate” is not one universal property across all wearable features.

What changes readings

Fit, placement, motion, skin contact, temperature, signal quality, and the activity being performed can all affect a wearable’s output. Features also have different validation approaches and limitations.

Measured versus estimated

A sensor may capture a pulse-related or movement signal while a device estimates a derived metric from it. Derived scores need more caution because they depend on an algorithm and its assumptions.

Use data thoughtfully

Look for consistent trends, compare against how you feel, and avoid treating a consumer wearable as diagnostic. Discuss health concerns with a qualified professional.
