What Does Resting Heart Rate Tell You?

Resting heart rate is the number of heartbeats per minute when your body is at rest. Its usefulness often comes from its trend over time rather than a single number.

Why it can change

Recent activity, sleep, stress, hydration, temperature, illness, medications, caffeine, and measurement conditions can all influence resting heart rate. That makes a single elevated or lower reading difficult to interpret in isolation.

Consistency helps

Comparisons are clearer when measurements are taken in similar conditions. Wearables can help capture repeated observations, but their readings can be affected by fit, motion, and sensor contact.

When to seek advice

A wearable reading is not a diagnosis. Seek professional advice for symptoms, a sustained concerning change, or any urgent health concern.
